Meals On Wheels Impact in the Community

By Lene Lauti, Marketing Intern

Here at Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. (PVI) we are always looking to serve our clients and enhance the lives of seniors in our community. Our Meals on Wheels program’s goal is to increase security access to nutritious food. Keeping older adults and adults with disabilities well nourished, healthy, and living in their own homes has always been our goal.

Starting this year, we have expanded our Meals on Wheels program into Northern San Mateo County. This expansion allows PVI to make a greater impact on the senior population here in the Bay Area. Our services are more than just providing a meal. Daily safety and wellness checks during meal delivery is vital to the safety and wellbeing of the participants.

There have been many positive stories about our expansion. Below are just a few examples of stories that show the impact that we have had so far.
Take 86-year-old Amanda. She has been a MOW client since December, 2014 and expresses her love for the program. The long-time Redwood City resident relies on Meals on Wheels for vegetables and food due to her inability to prepare meals.
There is also Maria, another homebound senior that lives alone and is unable to shop for groceries. She is hesitant to cook because she is afraid of injuring herself or damaging her house during the process. With the convenience that the MOW program provides, Maria is safe. She now has more time to enjoy her favorites hobbies and activities, such as painting and crafts.

Unfortunately, Maria does not get many visitors especially since her son lives on the east coast. But with the daily deliveries and friendly check-ups from the MOW drivers, that void is filled. The PVI home-delivered meals program opens opportunities for Maria and reduces her isolation, helping her to remain independent.

Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. Meals on Wheels program helps and serves hundreds of seniors like Amanda and Maria daily across the Peninsula. We are proud to provide more than 3,000 meals a week to seniors in our community and help eliminate food security.
