Meals on Wheels

The goal of PVI Meals on Wheels is to increase food security and access to nutritious food; keeping older adults and adults with disabilities well-nourished and healthy, living independently in their own homes. Every week, Peninsula Volunteers delivers over 3,000 hot, nutritious meals to primarily homebound seniors and adults with disabilities in San Mateo County who are unable to cook and shop for themselves.

Key Objectives –
Eliminate food insecurity

Delivering daily meals, with additional meals provided for holidays and weekends to eligible recipients, eligibility is based on being primarily homebound, rather than income. MOW meals provide at least 1/3 of an adult’s recommended daily nutritional intake and are prepared with strict nutrition oversight, no added salt and low amounts of fat and sugar.

Direct health monitoring

The daily safety and wellness check provided during meal delivery is vital to the safety and wellbeing of the participants. Staff & volunteer delivery personnel are trained to be alert to changing or immediate critical safety needs.

Assessment and referral

In-home assessments by the MOW Program Manager and interns provide primary data to track and monitor clients’ nutritional health status. Initial assessments upon enrollment are followed by re-assessments every 6 months – referrals are provided to other community services as appropriate.
